Hurricane Sandy--October 27-30, 2012
Here are photos and video captures of deteriorating conditions and damage in New Jersey from historic hurricane and superstorm Sandy, which struck the Mid-Atlantic during the final days of October 2012. This storm was the largest storm ever in the Atlantic, and most powerful to ever hit the Northeast. The storm had a wind field over 1,000 miles wide, and a minimum central pressure of 940 millibars along with maximum winds of 110 miles per hour before hitting Cuba. The storm generated a record 13.88 feet storm surge in the Battery Park section of New York City. The storm produced 20.3 feet along the south shores of Lake Michigan, blizzard conditions in West Virginia, and tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Sandy left the Jersey Shore from the Bayshore region of Monmouth County all the way down to Cape May in shambles. Trees down, street signs and traffic slights mangled, roads closed, blown transformers, power outages, tidal flooding, and chaos.
